Meaning + Motion: Tōshi Yoshida
This animation is a typographic and visual tribute to Tōshi Yoshida’s woodblock artistry, drawing from the themes, principles, and subjects that define his work. Using a restrained grayscale palette paired with varied shades and hues of a single accent color, the piece echoes Yoshida’s quiet clarity, atmospheric depth, and connection to nature. Through motion, it interprets his balance of tradition and modern expression, creating a calm, reflective rhythm inspired by his evolving artistic voice.
Ghibli Clouds
Inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s signature cloudscapes, this animation blends two different After Effects techniques to recreate the soft, painterly atmosphere seen in Studio Ghibli films. I created multiple cloud forms — two clouds drifting horizontally and a custom cloud-type treatment — then animated them together to form Miyazaki’s quote: “I never want to regret not trying something.” The line appears in the documentary Never-Ending Man, where he experiments with new technology, which became a fitting theme for this piece. The project became an exploration of texture, softness, and motion, combining tutorial-based learning with stylistic interpretation.
